Abstract
Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given consecutive daily doses of azathioprine 3mg, 5mg, 8mg/kg body weight from the 8th to 11th days of gestation.
Fetal body weight, crown-rump length, trunk width of fetuses, the weight, length and width of fetal brain, numbers of corpus luteum of maternal ovaries and numbers of fetuses per litter were studied.
The results obtained through the experiment were summarized as follows.
1. Significant decrease of fetal body weight came out in the all groups treated with azathioprine. 2. Crown-rump length of fetuses was decreased in the all experimental groups.
3. No changes of fetal trunk width were observed in the group I , but obvious reduction was
occured in the other experimental groups.
4. No decrease of fetal brain weight was occured in the group I , but there was slight decrease in the other experimental groups.
5. Both length and width of fetal brain were reduced in the all experimental groups.
6. Numbers of corpus luteum were slightly decreased in the all experimental groups but there
were no notable differences in number between the left and right ovaries.
7. Average number of fetuses per litter were slightly decreased in the all experimental groups
although there was no significant differences in number between the left and right uterus.
